Three factors set Philomel apart. First, Philomel has a unique and vibrant ensemble sound that has been enjoyed and acclaimed by audiences and critics around the world. Second, Philomel’s repertoire is "extraordinarily innovative and adventurous," exposing audiences of all ages to rarely performed works, as well as traditional baroque masterpieces. Finally, Philomel has an uncommon commitment to community outreach and educational enrichment, demonstrated in a wide range of activities throughout the region. Philomel’s annual schedule includes a fifteen-concert subscription series; extensive East Coast touring; unique Concerts & Conversations in senior centers and retirement communities; free Imagination Workshops, concerts, and master classes in public schools; and free Kids’ Concerts in area libraries; as well as local and regional radio broadcasts and periodic CD recordings. "Philomel" is a poetic name for the nightingale, a European songbird with a beautiful and often rhapsodically varied call. The name was used in 17th- and 18th-century poetry as a symbol of nature’s simple yet sublime beauty, the ideal that inspired the best of mankind’s artistic endeavors. It perfectly reflects our commitment to introducing greater Philadelphia audiences to the lyric melodies and clear harmonic tapestries of the baroque. |
